Psychiatric Nursing Jobs

Psychiatric nursing jobs are responsible for taking care of mentally ill, injured, or disabled patients in nursing care facilities, hospitals, and mental health settings. Typically working with other members of a health care team such as psychologist, psychiatrists, social workers, and therapists, professionals with psychiatric nursing jobs perform a range of functions to support the team. Maintaining medical histories and administering treatment are the common tasks for psychiatric nursing jobs.

For many psychiatric nursing jobs a high school diploma or its equivalent is a sufficient level of education although different qualifications may exist for different States. Training programs are offered in some nursing care facilities, vocational-technical centers, some community colleges, and high schools.

In 2006 there were about 62,000 individuals with psychiatric nursing jobs employed with the majority working in nursing and residential care facilities. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics there will be a slight increase in psychiatric nursing job employment over the 2006 to 2016 decade. This growth can be related to the rising number of elderly persons in the population who will require mental health services.
