Genetic Counselor Jobs

Genetic counselor jobs are in place to assist with families at adapting to children with genetic disorders or birth defects. By providing education to families and analyzing inheritance patterns and risks, an individual with a genetic counselor job can recommend the best available options. These health care professionals can work in an array of settings such as research, teaching, consultative, pharmaceutical, and commercial environment as the field of work continues to develop.

A bachelor's degree in psychology or biology along with a master's degree in genetic counseling is the minimum educational requirement for job seekers. An accredited college, community college, or university program offers the necessary curriculum for these careers and can be found locally. Certification is not required but employment opportunities may provide greater opportunities for professionals that have satisfied the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) conditions. Most states also have counselor licensing and require a master's degree.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is an expected 18 percent increase in employment over the 2008 to 2018 decade. Although the increase will vary by specialty, the employment gain overall will be much faster than the national average for all occupations. The number of available job opportunities is expected to be higher than the number of graduates which will create a favorable employment market.
